Emperor Friedrich IIIdeclared Bad Ischl a market town by royal decree 1466 - quite an important event in the economic development of the township. In 1821, it was designated a Metropol when the renowned baker, Johann Zauner moved from Vienna to Bad Ischl - truly the frosting on the cake! This was according to prescription, as it was Dr. Wirer who convinced him to come, knowing full well that no resort worth its salt could ever amount to anything if there were no sweets to be had.
Still today, one can indulge in one of Vienna's finest traditions - Kaffee und Kuchen - right here in the Emporer's summer resort; a visit to Zauner's to partake of their delectable confections is simply a must (They can measure up to anything served in the city on the Danube.....and the air is much better!)
