    The Mt. Katrin

    - Bad Ischl's "right in the backyard" summit. In fact, it's practically in the center of the city, something not every town can boast. Mt. Katrin offers visitors not only a fantastic view of Bad Ischl - by day and by night - but also an unbelivable panoramaof the whole inner Salzkammergut: from Hallstättersee all the way to Traunsee.

Suitable for athletic and teambuilding activities it naturally provides opportunities to gather, in a cozy little cottage (Almhütte, 45 persons) or in the restaurant (150 persons) on the upper terminus of the cable car.

    "Hand-crafted in Austria"

the unique cultural heritage of Austrian handicrafts are second to none - witness to the very identity of things Austrian. Forty-two of the most unique shops of hand-made items dot the "Meisterstrasse" [Master's Road], offering their wares under their official seal, "Dachmarke Meisterstrasse Salzkammergut".

And oh, the hidden treasures of a by-gone age along the way: hatmakers, stove-fitters, glass-blowers- shoemakers, goldsmiths even tailor-made Lederhosen - these artisans remind us that not all manufacturing has been outsourced. The Salzkammergut-Touristik can help you organize a group tour to this remarkable road.

...mountain men toiled and tunneld hundreds of meters deep into the Salt Mountains....kilometers of tunnels and shafts with tons of massive rock above. This is our "salt-realm", the only one of its kind on Earth.

Together with the miners of today, you can travel back in history, to the beginning of this alpine civilisation, nearly 7.000 years ago. See the "man in the salt", the  world's longest mountaineer slide, a huge subterranen salt lake, mystically lit, and the brightly shimmering salt chrystal chamber - these are only a few of the attractions waiting for the visitor to these extraordinary mountains.

    Prähistoric Expedition:
With protective clothing, helmet and lamp one takes off on a unique “Prehistoric Expedition”. Small groups penetrate deep into the heart of the mountain. The tour of several hours leads through the so-called “Hallstatt Period” and on to the exciting traces and relics from 7,000 years of salt mining. One sees the famous Hallstatt wall markings and the pine-wood torches, which a miner held in his hands thousands of years ago, or the oldest staircase in the world, to bring one incomparably close to times long past!
For small groups up to 12 persons. Duration about 4 hours.

The Dachstein Cave World and its three natural show caves rank among the most significant natural monuments of Austria.

Giant Ice Cave, ranking among the biggest ice caves worldwide, is the probably most remarkable highlight of the World Heritage site, attracting 150.000 visitors per year. Less icy yet not less interesting are the extensive Mammut Cave at the mountain and Koppenbrüller Cave in the valley, the latter featuring amazing underground streams especially at periods of thaw and heavy rainfalls.

Installations, created by the students of the Linz University of Art, provide complementary impressions in all caves and provide surprising light and sound experiences.

    Adventure tip:

“Heaven and Cave“ - nature & landscape tours focus as regards content on geology and socially on group- dynamics at and in the mountain. The customized tours may vary in the degree of difficulty and the participants venture mostly off paved walkways to examine various aspects of rambling Mammut Cave, including a rustic explorer-snack.

Amazed visitors at the largest active salt mine in Austria are led past the “Chamber of Inner Light” and the “Chapel of St Barbara” before sliding down into the heart of the mountain on two miners’ slides: directly to the subterranean salt lake, which with its unique musical- and visual presentation is an unforgettable experience for the entire group.

The diversity of the Altaussee Salt Mine fascinates everyone with a stimulating mixture of fun, excitement, wonder and knowledge.
